Port of Long Beach -- Vehicle-to-Grid -- Botsford Answers Questions

Electric vehicles have the capability of providing power back to a house (V2H), another vehicle (V2V), a building (V2B), and even the grid, also known as V2G.

Mr. Botsford is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J-3072 committee for AC vehicle-to-grid (AC V2G). He participated in the standards development, particularly in the EVSE portion. Standards development is ongoing as communications protocols (e.g., IEEE 2030.5) and grid connection issues such as IEEE 1547-2018 and California Rule 21 dictate how to interconnect with the grid.

While DC V2G is relatively straightforward and established, AC V2G is anything but. And, of course, AC V2G is where the vast potential of unleashing the energy storage power of EV battery packs lies.

Electric Vehicle Association -- Emerald Valley -- Tesla/NACS Questions for Botsford

Charlie Botsford, Project Manager of the West Coast Electric Highway of EV fast charging stations in Oregon and Washington takes audience questions on the great connector transition from CHAdeMO and CCS1 to Tesla/NACS to SAE J3400.

Mr. Botsford is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J3400 committee that is chartered with turning Tesla’s connector into a full up standard, via SAE J3400. The work will transition the variety of EV charging connectors, some that work, some that don’t, to one reliable, standardized connector.

EVS 36 -- Sacramento, CA -- Present Synchrophasor Paper on NEVI EV Charging Stations

Use of synchrophasors to transform NEVI EV charging stations and energy storage into distribution grid nodes

Mr. Botsford will present his paper on the use of micro phasor measurement units ( uPMUs) with microgrid control to transform conventional NEVI-class, and larger, EV charging stations into grid assets. Integrating behind-the-meter energy storage and renewable energy enhances the grid services offering and with it, the business model.
